Masculine Leadership Failed, So I Tried This

“I’m sure you didn’t mean to offend anyone, but…” the text read. I stared at my phone, feeling a wave of panic wash over me.
Years ago, I held a leadership position that afforded me the opportunity to organize a film screening. My colleagues and I were thrilled at the prospect of showcasing a film that exemplified ideals of peace and justice. However, I was taken aback when I received a text from a fellow community member, highlighting instances from the film director’s past where he made discriminatory comments.
What should I do? A flurry of questions overwhelmed me.
My first step was to set up a meeting with the community member who sent me the text. Let’s call him Tim. I wanted to learn more. I briefed my colleague on the matter and extended an invitation to join me.
At the start of the meeting, I encouraged Tim to share his experiences with us. To my dismay, my colleague repeatedly interrupted him, focusing solely on the logistical aspects and overarching goals of the event. While I recognized the event’s significant financial investment and expectations, I was troubled by the lack of empathy being demonstrated. I recognized the need to balance the emotional atmosphere in the room with the logistical considerations at hand.
I arranged separate meetings with the concerned individuals to listen attentively to their perspectives. My goal was to earn their trust and demonstrate that creative solutions were possible. My priority was to execute this project while ensuring that every person in the room felt respected and valued.
Through collaborative dialogue and creative problem-solving, we found ways to alleviate the discomfort without resorting to cancelling the event.
Reflecting on the principles outlined in our May book pick, Shakti Leadership: Embracing Feminine and Masculine Power in Business, I realized I was embodying traits of adaptability, creativity, and inclusivity – defined as feminine leadership qualities in the book – while navigating this situation. These qualities complemented the logical, structured approached typically associated with masculine leadership. By embracing both sets of qualities, I was able to address the concerns of everyone in the room while remaining focused on the event’s broader objectives.
This experience underscored the effectiveness of blending feminine and masculine leadership qualities to lead with efficiency and compassion. As I continue to explore the concept of Shakti leadership this month, I am eager to hear your stories and perspectives as well.
Can you recall a situation in which you seamlessly integrated feminine and masculine leadership qualities in your life?

My friend,
, recommended this book to me. I found it to be the perfect choice for the next book pick.Shakti Leadership: Embracing Feminine and Masculine Power in Business by Nilima Bhat and Raj Sisodia demonstrates the synergy between the two leadership styles.
In Hindu philosophy, Shakti and Shiva represent two inseperable energy centers within the body. Shakti embodies the dynamic source of power and energy, while Shiva represents consciousness. Together, they symbolize the interplay of feminine and masculine energies, essential for balance and harmony.
This book explores how these cosmic forces, particularly Shakti, manifest in our leadership styles. Its central message emphasizes the significance of integrating both feminine and masculine qualities to lead effectively and compassionately. This approach is crucial for guiding individuals towards shared goals and ultimate fulfillment.
